Projects
In addition to providing concrete solutions to technical and supervisory challenges at environmentally compromised sites, Nick Bauer has shared his expertise with corporate managers, industry leaders, and government regulators in many other venues. Among his numerous projects are the development of company-wide environmental health and safety programs, the training of corporate personnel in environmental issues, the creation of innovative audit methodologies, and the preparation of technical manuals, third-party reviews, and litigation support strategies.
FEATURED PROJECTS:

International Finance Corporation Environmental, Health, and Safety Guidelines
Bauer & Associates was one of two U.S. consultants selected by the International Finance Corporation to help write and revise industry-specific environmental, health, and safety guidelines.  IFC uses the EHS Guidelines as a technical source of information during project appraisal activities.  The EHS Guidelines contain the performance levels and measures that are generally considered to be achievable in new facilities at reasonable costs by existing technology.
  Arrowhead Plating Superfund Site, Virginia
The shallow groundwater at the thirty-acre Arrowhead Plating Superfund Site in Westmoreland County, Virginia, was contaminated with chlorinated solvents, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was concerned about the condition of the deeper aquifer.
Fultz Landfill Superfund Site, Byesville, Ohio
The Fultz Landfill, a privately-owned 22-acre site that accepted household, municipal, and industrial solid waste from 1958 until 1985, overlies a flooded coal mine aquifer that is the primary drinking water source for the City of Byesville, OH.

Former Scovill Industrial Landfill Superfund Site, Connecticut
The 30-acre former Scovill Industrial Landfill, located in Waterbury, CT, comprises 34 parcels owned by 19 individuals or organizations. About 22 acres of the former landfill are developed with single and multi-family housing, and most of the area is paved or covered with buildings.

Former Metal Plating Manufacturing Facility Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Site, Tennessee
A facility that manufactured automotive tire valves and gauges on an 80-acre site from 1965 until 1985 treated its wastewater on-site, and the resulting sludge was disposed of in permitted on-site hazardous waste landfill cells.

Caldwell Trucking Superfund Site, Fairfield, New Jersey
Mr. Bauer represented Saltire Industrial and was chair of the Technical Committee at this U.S. EPA Region 2 multi-party site contaminated with chlorinated solvents and lead. The committee successfully negotiated with the EPA to replace the originally selected soil remedy, an on-site hazardous waste landfill, with in-situ soil stabilization combined with excavation and off-site disposal of small “hot spots.”

Due Dilligence Assesments for Alper Ink Group , U.S.A. and Mexico
Mr. Bauer led the environmental due diligence for the acquisition and sale of 27 industrial facilities and properties in 17 states and Mexico, including two contaminated brownfields.

Audits of Industrial and Commercial Facilities, U.S.A.
Mr. Bauer led audit teams that conducted environmental compliance and liability assessments on more than 200 facilities in numerous industrial categories, including steel manufacturing and finishing, iron foundries, synthetic organic chemicals, petroleum refining and petrochemicals, pharmaceutical products, metal plating and finishing, plastics, printing, inks, textiles, paint formulation, vehicle maintenance and food processing.

Development of EHS System for Alper Ink Group
Mr. Bauer developed a comprehensive, integrated corporate environmental, health, and safety (EHS) program for a manufacturing company with annual sales of $170 million. To understand the operations, Mr. Bauer visited facilities from each of the component companies that had been combined through acquisitions.

  Saltire Industrial, Inc. Environmental Management
Mr. Bauer developed, implemented, and coordinated all corporate environmental policies and procedures for Saltire Industrial, Inc., a former Fortune 500 company in business since 1802, and its parent company, Alper Holdings USA, Inc.
